The police man taking measurements is stood on Vernon Street The other people are stood on Davenport Steet the Royal Public house is behind the motor cycle and is still there to this day (2012) The top house on Davenport Street where someone is stood outside is where I spent most of my childhood with my grandparents who had a fruit and fish shop this was the last house on Davenport Street number 127 The houses top right of the picture are on Snowden Street
the pub on the left is the royal hotel. it is the only original building left on vernon st. this photo is at the corner of davenport st. It looks like my grandma stood outside her fruit shop which was the top house no.127
Our family lived on Davenport street in the late 50’s until the old terraced houses were demolished in the 80’s and a number of us still live in the area, i’m pretty sure that the photographer taking this shot would be stood on the bottom right end of Davenport street at the junction with Vernon street as the Royal Hotel (still trading) is on the left and the veiw behind the policemen and the bystanders is of Snowden street.
My paternal grandmother lived at 6, Snowden Street.
Hi Nikki was number 6 Snowden St closest to Davenport St or right at the other end if it was near Davenport St did you know anybody named Billy Doeg who was a friend of my uncle Bob and i believe is still alive he did contact the museum because they were spelling his name wrong a couple of years ago and as he knew my grand parents i would love to meet him thank you Dennis
Fascinating photograph. As a police vehicle historian I would like to add the following information.
The machine WH5330 was a Bolton Borough Police Royal Enfield motor cycle combination bought in 1933 and sold in early 1935. Could perhaps have been parked a little tidier!
I am always welcome information regarding police vehicles especially photographs.
