I believe my Grandfather lived in this pub as a child. I think his father (William McCann) was the licensee before the First World War. My grandfather took over the management of the pub from about 1944 until about 1950. He saw the damage done by people drinking who could not afford it and would refuse to serve customers who he thought had had enough. He was largely teetotal himself until he retired to Cornwall when he brewed his own! He told me that he took an interest in how to keep the beer at peak condition and never adulterated his beer as other publicans did. He did add a secret ingredient to the beer which gave it a great frothy head and his beer was the most popular locally.
I forgot to mention that I lived here as 6 month old child when my mother came back from South Africa. It was about 1951 that we all moved out of the pub to Bradshaw. Needless to say I don’t have any memories of living there!
