Further to my earlier email re location, I think the crane jib showing from the large building to the rear may be that over the loading bay at the rear of Tillotsons which ran into a narrow back road, possibly Folds Street off Bradshawgate. May be possible to check with photos of same – if it fits, this is 100% the Deansgate abattoir, recorded as the Shambles on the 1849 Town Plan. Later high-definition OS maps record this as a ‘space’ – maybe the cartographers didn’t like going there! However, the lower-definition maps still seem to show it. My dad was apprenticed at the age of 11 c 1925, and if the images are of him he is at least in his early/mid twenties.
