Have you any memories, new information or corrections relating to this picture?
was this more of a wine and spirit store rather than a pub? Would it be listed in a trade directory of the time? Could that have been Sweetens Bookshop to the right? (Knowsley Street/Deansgate being the clue)
George munroes was in mealhouse lane at the deansgate end. to the right was dunn and co. gents outfitters. marks and spencers now stand on this land. I think they called it the three tuns.
The Pub was George Munro & Co`s BAY HORSE and was at one time known as the SCOTCH VAULTS It was on the south side of Deansgate facing Bridge Street It was taken over by Marks & Spencer in 1959 As it dates back to 1770 what a pity it did not remain in this position I would have loved to seen it now and very near to the (Old) Man & Scythe well I can dream cant I
Dennis is right about the Scotch Vaults. I was talking about the entrance on Mealhouse Lane.
Dennis is correct about the scotch vaults. I was talking about the entrance on Mealhouse lane as it was on the corner.
There was another wines and spirits merchants called Ross Munros on Victoria Square and one on Bradshawgate I believe. Did George go into partnership?
The pub shown , I am told , (as stated before) , by my dad was the scotch vaults and he told me about a theatre across the road , ‘can’t remember the name , but , there was a doorman called Richard “Dick” Baldwin , who used to shout ‘ COME IN OUT THE RAIN ‘ whether it was raining or not , when he was heard to shout this the show was to start and he would go over to the pub where a pint of beer was waiting for him.
The theatre was the Hippodrome, I think, where Frank Finlay started his career.
