Boys playing with chicken feet - Photograph

…Children playing in the street were one of Spender’s favourite subjects. Whilst games like marbles are still popular others are unfamiliar today. These boys are playing with chicken’s feet. They could open and close them by pulling on the tendons. We don’t know the location of this photograph although it is probably in Bolton town centre, if you can help locate it please leave a comment below….

Market Hall - Photograph

…ls in Bolton’s market hall in the early 1980s. The hall has now become an indoor shopping centre. Bolton’s other market on Ashburner Street is still open and bustling (2012). Humphrey Spender revisited and photographed Bolton in the early 1980s for the short film ‘Return Journey’. The documentary was directed by Ian Potts, and funded by the Arts Council and ITV.
