One of the topics that Mass Observation initially proposed for study was ‘the aspidistra cult’. Aspidistras are a type of house plant which became symbolic of middle class values at the start of last century. George Orwell’s book ‘Keep the Aspidistra Flying’ used the plant to typify respectability.
