Description
This is the Daubhill railway crossing on the original line of the railway from Bolton to Chequerbent (later Leigh and Kenyon Junction). This is 200 yards east of Daubhill station closed in 1952. The terrace in the middle of the picture is Southend Street. The gable end at the left is the end of Nixon Road. The line of the railway is now occupied by a swimming school. The smaller notice board refer to the Holiness Tabernacle – renamed Church of the Nazarene in 1952 and still going strong. The chimney and tower with the flagpole are part of the Sunnyside / Tootal Broadhurst Lee complex. The chimney is long gone. The tower is still visible alongside the Lantor mill.
Thank you to David Collier for the caption.
A great uncle of mine had a job bagging coal at the railway sidings that,I assume, were near to where this photograph was taken. His name was William (Willie) Cripps. Does anyone have any information about this man. My memories are very scant as he died when I was a boy but by all accounts he was a bit of a character. The only other thing I know is that he served in the first world war.
Who actually used to operate the gate/crossing whilst a train passed?
If the middle of the picture is Southend Street then this photo was definately taken from St Helens Road because Southend Street started on St Helens Road.
Francis, that is the railway sidings what you can see because St Helens Road went over a bridge over the main railway line towards the west. I can remember that bridge because as kids we every now and then went to that bridge, sat on the top and pee’d on the trains that went under the bridge. I don’t think anybody saw us?? The railway crossing was only for that railway siding.
